FROM TEXT TO ABSTRACTION

This gallery (National Museum of Vranje) hosted the young, but remarkable North Macedonian visual artist Ana Jovanovska, who has introduced a graphics exhibition titled From Text to Abstraction.

Before us are works- says art historian Mirjana Jovanovic – prints and drawings of Ana Jovanovska made in the period from 2012 to 2015. At the beginning of her research effort, following her artistic sensibility Ana approaches each graphical sheet as a new challenge that needs to be answered. In terms of content, the artist opts for abstract and geometric art solutions that allow different levels of a particular reading. Her work is characterized by an interesting artistic signature. What is real is the author’s playful imagination.

All of these works – continues Jovanovic– is an independent continent as a witness for themselves but also a part of these synchronized items. What is common to them all is the meticulousness from the idea to realization. If we examine the whole, the plastic values range from extremely reduced minimalist treated surfaces to graphics where they combine saturated painted surfaces.

Ana plays with black and white surfaces, shapes, letters, human figures. Using horizontal, vertical, and diagonal, she constructs a skeleton motif whether it is one word, one letter, or an entire text, using various methods and techniques. In a series of prints and drawings dominated by whiteness graphic sheet of paper or a sign of a pure form, and it is the language with which to communicate with the viewer in a universal way.
